You’re planning a wedding. It’s a full time job, except I’m guessing you already have a job. So you’re trying to fit it in around everything else. You’re seriously busy, booking the right wedding DJ will save you a lot of time and hassle further down the line and give you peace of mind. Here are my tips for what to look out for when booking a wedding DJ.
Is this their main source of income? Are they insured, carry full public and liability insurance? Is their equipment safety checked and are they a member of Professional Trade Associations?
Getting everything spelled out in a contract means that you and the DJ are clear about what you are getting and what you are paying for. Remember to get any details clearly outlined. Wedding packages are a great way of spelling out what you are getting. But look for a DJ who is happy to be flexible with them. You don't want to feel pressured into signing up for extra amenities if you don't need them.
Do they have a website? Can you see testimonials from happy customers? Can you see footage and photographs of weddings they have DJ’d in the past? These will show you how the DJ will interact with your guests. Can they offer you samples of them mixing and blending different tracks?
Ask them what equipment they utilize. DJs should always carry the equivalent of a "flat tyre" on them. Ask them what back up equipment they have should something go wrong on the day.
One size does not fit all. A good wedding DJ is flexible and willing to listen. Look for a DJ who will create a soundtrack for your wedding that is based on your style, taste, and vision for your day. A skilled DJ will gladly accept your must-play and do-not-play lists, no matter how short or long.
Agree with your DJ how song requests are handled in advance. Your guests may ask for songs that are some way off your play list. A skilled DJ will try to deliver your wishes whilst satisfying the guests’ request.
Has the DJ played at your venue before? If they haven’t they should tell you that they will visit the venue prior to the event. It is essential your DJ knows how to work the room’s acoustics before the day.
Don't forget to ask them when they plan to arrive and how long it will take for them to set up.
